Karytaina ( Greek : Καρύταινα, also written as Karitena), is a town located in the western part of the prefecture of Arcadia in the central Peloponnese.
Karytaina has a school, a lyceum, a church, a post office, a gas station, and a square ( plateia).
Karytaina is surrounded by mountains and a larger one to the north.

The city of Karytaina situated in such a spot, had the prior benefit of significance as a military post, taking for granted that all the natural passages to Messenian and mountainous Arcadian districts were obviously being liable to observation, or even restraint, when needed, throughout French domination until the late 17th century.
Karytaina is believed to have had such a strategic importance during the Middle Ages that was comparable only to the corresponding one of Megalopolis during Antiquity.
In 1458 Venetians besieged Karytaina in the command of Bentholdo d' Este, and afterwards the Turks besieged and finally conquered it.
