As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 50,510 and the density of 336.31 persons per km².
The city was founded on April 1, 1967 when the towns of Hōjō-chō, Izumi-chō and Kasai-chō were combined to form Kasai-shi (Kasai city).
Kasai has two festivals: Saisai festival in early August and Seku festival in early April.

 Ex-World War I POW camp found in Hyogo Pref Japan Policy & Politics - Find Articles
Two barns at a private home in Kasai, Hyogo Prefecture, were part of a POW camp for German and Austrian soldiers during World War I (1914-1918), the nearby Ono city government's history research panel announced Thursday.
The two wooden barns measuring about 120 square meters and 40 square meters are believed to be a portion of a lodging house and bath house, members of the panel said.
The POW camp in Kasai in the western Japan prefecture was open from September 1915 to April 1920 and its six-block camp housed 251 German soldiers and 226 Austrian soldiers.

The Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, 2 Mar. 2001: Sanyo Electric Co. is preparing for mass production of NiMH batteries for use in hybrid electric vehicles.
The Tokonabe plant in Kasai City, Hyogo Prefecture, is being developed as a production base of HEV Integrated Starter-Generator systems.
Sanyo will supply battery systems for Ford Motor Co.’s first HEV, which is expected to be available in 2003.
