Kasama officially achieved city status (市) in August 1, 1958, after the towns (町) of Kasama and Inada merged.
It is noted for its fine quality, and thus Kasama is one of the most important artistic centers in the Kanto region.
Kasama's pottery has a long history, which is connected with that of nearby Mashiko.

Uetake Satoshi (1956-) was born in Tsuchiura, Ibaraki Prefecture, and apprenticed under talented Kasama potter Nakano Koji in 1978, while becoming independent and forming his own kiln in 1984.
Uetake is a potter who represents a new generation of artists from Ibaraki, and is highly skilled in his techniques -such is evident in the linear patterns, which take much time and effort to complete.
He name is growing in recognition overseas as well, and is certainly an artist to watch.

Thirteen of the town’s 230 potteries currently create and sell the UD tableware featuring everything from cups with straighter handles for easier gripping to soup bowls with brims that that tilt inward rather than out to minimize spilling.
The idea of the town’s arts community becoming involved in creating UD tableware came from a local dentist, Shoichi Hanawa, who noticed that, while making rounds to visit elderly patients, many of them would be eating meals from paper plates for safety reasons while still requiring additional assistance.
Hanawa pitched his idea for UD tableware to the Ceramics Technology Office of the Ibaraki prefectural government's Industrial Technology Institute with the promise that creating tableware that could be easily used by people of all abilities would make dining a more pleasant experience for everyone.

For those who don't know, Potiron-no-Mori is located in Ibaraki, but is literally minutes away from Chiba Prefecture(According to their website, it takes only 30 min.
