Kasaoka City Horseshoe Crab (kabutogani) Museum (hakubutsukan) is the only horseshoe crab museum in the world.
The museum opened March 16, 1990 with the purpose of protecting and promoting the breeding of this "living fossil." This museum holds the world's foremost collection of information on the evolution of this creature that has outlived the dinosaurs that appeared on the earth when it evolved to its present figure 200 million years ago.

Currently, the population of horseshoe crabs in Kasaoka Bay is estimated to be between 40 to 50 pairs.
Recognizing the coastline bordering Kasaoka City as a key area for horseshoe crab breeding, the municipal government dedicated the coast as a national monument for horseshoe crabs in 1928.
The Kasaoka Municipal Horseshoe Crab Museum was built in 1990 to promote appreciation and interest in the conservation of Tachypleus tridentatus.

A tidal flat along Kasaoka Bay in Kasaoka was historically a bastion for this species.
Although this area was designated as a protective zone for horseshoe crabs by the Japanese government, in 1966 a land reclamation project covering over 1,811 hectares in the bay was begun.
When the government learned that the species was in danger of extinction it turned the center into The Kasaoka City Horseshoe Crab Museum and in 1993 launched a five year project to raise horseshoe crabs from eggs to release into the bay in an attempt to increase the numbers.

The Rotary Club of Tauranga, New Zealand, and its overseas sister clubs Broadbeach, Qld., and Kasaoka, Japan, have completed a project to substantially fund the purchase of laser optical surgery equipment for use on board the motor vessel Pacific Link.
Former well-known Tauranga pharmacist Ken Allan was a past-president of Tauranga Rotary and later a member of the Broadbeach club on moving to Australia.
Musical entertainment was provided by Misses Anna Holland and Frances-Anne Pilbrow, both daughters of club members and guided tours of the ship completed a memorable occasion.

After spending the next week in the city of Kasaoka, Sprout met up with her home-stay family of seven, including a set of twins, an eight year old daughter and 15 and 17 year old sons.
