 Katana
Perhaps one of the more famous types of Japanese fencing was "Nitto Ryu" or the use of both the Katana and Wakizashi in tandem; a technique most famously used by Miyamoto Musashi.
As the techniques of the ancient smiths had been lost during the previous period of war, these swords were called shinto, literally 'new swords.' This gave the obvious name to the older blades as koto, 'old swords.' The blades that predated the curved blades introduced around 987AD were refered to as 'jokoto' or ancient swords.
Munetsugu published opinions that the arts and techniques of the shinto swords were inferior to the koto blades, and that research should be made by all swordsmiths in the land to rediscover the lost techniques.

Omori was a swordman of the Yagyu Shinkage ryu (Bishu style) founded by Kamiizumi Ise no Kami Fujiwara Nobutsuna (or Hidetsuna), himself a student of Kage ryu, Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto ryu, Kashima Shinto ryu, and heavily influenced by Zen master Takuan (1573-1645).

 Origin of the Dan Grading System
The last scroll awarded was the "Menkyo" or "License" which was awarded when the student began learning the most secret part of of the ryu (remember at that time certain part of the curriculum was reserved for a restricted only part of students).
When he had learned that last part, he was awarded Menkyo Kaiden, as having mastery of the entire curriculum of the Ryu, as well as the right to award all of the scrolls of the system.
Normally in each ryu only one Menkyo Kaiden was awarded at a time, thus ensuring continuity of the ryu.
