It would be wrong and offensive to label Kashiwa a generic saxophonist, because there is a dash more respect for traditional jazz in his soloing than the literal lip service paid by many smooth horn players; like the genre itself, Kashiwa is the sum of all his influences.
Jeff Kashiwa is one of the guys that somehow manages to remember to inject serious playing and writing into his albums rather than just stamp out a few more songs whose inspiration rises no higher than the loop on the drum machine.
Kashiwa is an honest musician and his clarity is to be admired.

Kashiwa plays alto, soprano and tenor saxes, either wrote or co-wrote eight of the nine songs and also produced and arranged several of them.
Kashiwa continues his storytelling with "Here And Now," a song that definitely proves his musical growth as a leader since leaving his days as a sideman with The Rippingtons behind.
He switches to soprano saxophone on the sexy and languid "Ecstasy," and it’s all about the peace and joy on “Peace of Mind.” Once again Jeff shows his versatility as a smooth jazz star and composer by providing decent sections for his band mates to show off their improvising skills.

Remember Catalina - Jeff Kashiwa - Song Listings
Jeff Kashiwa's longtime tenure with the Rippingtons (perhaps the ultimate launching pad for successful instrumental solo artists) has primed him for putting together this recording, easily one of the most dynamic and diverse woodwind collections of the mid-'90s.
Above and beyond the brassy funk explosions and a spirited cover of an old Spinners classic, however, is a tender traditional side of Kashiwa's personality, as on the David Benoit tinged closer "A Familiar Place" and the Tim Weisberg like "The Asian Persuasion," on which the hopeless romantic breezes in on alto flute.
Adding Dave Samuels' vibes and marimba genius to winners like the title cut and the rich, bluesy "Mardi Gras" is another stroke of magnificence in a tropical, artsy jazz vein.
