Kazimierz Fajans - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Afterwards Fajans was working on the electrochemical properties of elements as a result of the radioactive changes, and he formulated the law of the radioactive moves which was later named the Soddy-Fajans Method (Frederick Soddy received the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1921 for his isotopic research).
Fajans and Otto Hahn were the discoverers of the formula that defined the conditions of the precipitation and absorption of radioactive substances.
The co-relation of Born, Fajans and Haber is one of the basic termochemical rule.

On the basis of his research data Fajans formulated the essential conclusions concerning chemical bonding strength and deformation of ions and particles, such as heat of ion hydration, refraction measurements and the heat of sublimation.

In 1913, Fajans arrived simultaneously with, but independently of, Frederick Soddy at the theory of isotopes.
In inorganic chemistry, Fajans formulated two rules to account for the diagonal similarities between elements in the periodic table in terms of the ease of formation of covalencies and electrovalencies (ionic valencies).
Fajans was born in Warsaw and educated at Leipzig, Heidelberg, Zürich, and Manchester.

About 10 years later, Soddy and Kasimir Fajans independently unraveled the pattern of transformations that accompanied α and β radioactive decay.
The product of a β decay has one more proton and one fewer neutron than before the decay (because in β decay, a neutron turns into a proton, which remains in the nucleus, and an electron and neutrino, which are ejected).

 Kasimir Fajans
Kasimierz Fajans or Kasimir Fajans was a Polish-American chemist who did valuable work on chemical bonding and on radioactivity and isotopes.
In inorganic chemistry, he formulated what became known as Fajans rules to account for the formation of covalent rather than ionic bonds.
In 1913, independently but simultaneously with Frederick Soddy, he arrived at a theory of isotopes, and used this to explain the radioactive decay of Uranium-238.

Protactinium has been called the "mother" of actinium, which is formed by the alpha decay of protactinium.
The first discovery of protactinium was in 1913 by Kasimir Fajans and O. Göhring, who found the isotope protactinium-234m (half-life 1.2 min), a decay product of uranium-238; they named it brevium for its short life.
Protactinium-231 was first identified in 1918 by Otto Hahn and Lisa Meitner and independently by Frederick Soddy and John A. Cranston; the name protoactinium was adopted at this time.

Soddy also theorized and then proved that radioactivity is accompanied by a chemical "transmutation" of the elements--that is, one element changing into another element by nuclear decay.
Protactinium was first identified by Kasimir Fajans and O. Göhring in 1913 while they were studying uranium's decay.

Similarly, the discovery of isotopes in the early years of the twentieth century led to a crisis in which the known “atoms” appeared to have suddenly multiplied in number.
Some chemists like Kasimir Fajans stated that the periodic table would not survive this discovery.
However, the radio-chemist Fritz Paneth argued, like Mendeleev, that the periodic table should not primarily classify simple substances like the isotopes of the elements.

In 1913 German-American physicist Kasimir Fajans (1887-1975) and his colleague, O. Göhring, claimed to have found element number 91.
It was much easier to study than the isotope discovered by Fajans and Göhring.
The new element was originally given the name protoactinium, meaning "first actinium." It comes from the way the element breaks down.

By the 1920s, however, physicists were defining elements according to the number of protons within the atomic nucleus.
Meanwhile, pioneering work by Frederick Soddy and Kasimir Fajans demonstrated the existence of different isotopes - atoms that have similar chemical properties but different masses.
This work culminated in 1932 with James Chadwick's discovery of the neutron, the uncharged particle that effectively damps out the Coulomb repulsion between the charged protons.

The goal of the project is to learn what happens inside the cell when it is exposed to neurotoxic agents.
If we can learn exactly how these toxins trigger a flood of ions in and out of cells, we may be able to speed up development of antidotes or countermeasures for lethal biological warfare agents," says Raoul Kopelman, the U-M's Kasimir Fajans Professor of Chemistry, Physics and Applied Physics.
This ability to "watch what's happening inside a cell" has a wide variety of potential applications in other fields---including cancer therapy, glucose monitoring, drug or chemical toxicity testing, and all areas of biosensing, he noted
