	Professor Juan Carlos Kaski
		Kaski was born in Mar del Plata, Argentina, and studied Medicine at the Universidad del Salvador, in Buenos Aires, where he was awarded the ‘Alberto Villamil Prize’ and the School of Medicine "Gold Medal".
		Kaski was invited to return to London to direct a research section in the Cardiovascular Unit at Hammersmith Hospital where he was appointed Senior Registrar and Lecturer in Cardiology.
		Kaski was Chairman of the Microcirculation Working Group of the European Society of Cardiology and a member of both the Training and Education Committee and the Scientific Board of the European Society of Cardiology.

	Five-week antibiotic treatment may improve cardiovascular function
		Once a microbe was identified, researchers tried to find an antibiotic that could eradicate it, says Juan Carlos Kaski, M.D., a co-author of the study and a professor of cardiovascular science at St. George's Hospital Medical School, London.
		He says that C. pneumoniae proved to be a good candidate for this approach because it is a common infection and evidence of it has been discovered in plaque removed from arteries of people with coronary artery disease.
		Moreover, Kaski says the benefit of the antibiotic might not be a direct result of the drug's ability to eradicate the pathogen, because their study showed that patients who had very high levels of C. pneumoniae antibodies had essentially the same benefit as those with low levels.

		Kaski enrolled 324 patients from four hospitals in south London in his study, STAMINA (South Thames trial of Antibiotics in Myocardial INfarction and unstable Angina).
		All the patients received standard treatment and were then randomized into three groups: one received a therapy that included azithromycin, metronidazole and omeprazole; one was given a regimen of amoxicillin, metronidazole and omeprazole and the third group received placebo.
		The antibiotics selected by Dr. Kaski's team was aimed at controlling infection by Chlamydia pneumoniae and Helicobacter pylori, both of which have been suggested as causes of atherosclerosis in other studies.

		Atherosclerosis, a gradual narrowing of arteries, has a strong inflammatory component, and in recent years researchers have begun to understand that constant, elevated blood levels of CRP pointed to increased cardiovascular risk.
		In this most recent study, Kaski's team used angiograms -- X-rays that gauge blockage of coronary arteries -- to track changes in arterial health in 124 heart patients with angina over a 12-month period.
		Kaski cautioned that "more work needs to be done before this marker can be used routinely, in the same way we are currently using cholesterol measurements." But he said it's "conceivable that in the not so distant future CRP measurements will be incorporated into our diagnostic/prognostic armamentarium."
