Although Kastellorizo was culturally and administratively dependent on Rhodes, it maintained a considerable degree of autonomy.
In later times, Kastellorizo's history is identical to that of Rhodes.

Kastellorizo has many interesting sights, some of which are, The Castle at the port which was built upon the ruins of the ancient castle, in the 14th century by the Knights of Saint John and received its name from the red colour of the rocks.
The Lycian Tomb, a church-like grave built at between the end of the 5th century B.C. and the beginning of the 4th century B.C. The church of St Konstantine and Eleni was built in 1835 with granite brought over from the temple of Apollo in Lycia, in Asia Minor.

The ancient name of the island, is due to its first settler Megisteas but according to another interpretation is due to the fact that the island is the biggest from all small islands spread in the area.

Kastellorizo, the ancient Megisti, or Meis in Turkish, is the easternmost part of Greece and certainly the most isolated, being 70 nmi East of Rhodes.
The museum which is housed in a restored building within the castle consists of 2-3 small rooms with antiquities (not too exiting since the best pieces are in the National Museum in Athens) and some rather interesting ethnographic material (old photographs, costumes, embroideries, etc.).
Kastellorizo is a lovely, low key, slightly sleepy place where the main occupation of everyone is to watch everyone else.
