Katakuri or Katakuriko (片栗粉) is a name of starch originally processed from the root of Erythronium japonicum or katakuri (片栗).
Katakuri is used in a variety of food to add the distinctive sticky thickening to the sauce.
The most exotic use of katakuri is to use katakuri starch to simulate bukkake where it will be mixed with water to archive desired thickness.

The real wildflower has a pinkish-purple nodding flower with reflexed petals and a protruding bunch of 'things' in the center (stamen and pistils -- think 'lily' here) with rounded, broad, speckled leaves that appear to be in a rosette around the base of the flower stems.
I do not have a picture of a katakuri but here is someone who does.

The musical performances serve to make the Katakuris more endearing also, performed in the style of enthusiastic amateurs rather than highly trained dancers as they cavort about the place, this is not Gene Kelly suddenly tap dancing effortlessly wherever he happens to be.

Though Miike's HotK is not for all tastes (and neither is any of his other films), it is a funny, ridiculous, and strange comedy musical that contains hints of a number of genres, mixed together until it is impossible to tell which one Miike is going to stick with.
'Katakuris' is a remake of a 1998 Korean film called The Quiet Family (Choyonghan kajok), which is not a musical.
My favorite dance number has to be the 'falling in love song' with the daughter character and the Navy guy.

The Happiness of the Katakuris is nothing if not an inventive and entertaining little slice of cinema and believe me, the genre description of "musical/comedy/horror" is completely honest.
It tells the story of the Katakuri family, which consists of a man and wife, their son and daughter, their daughter's daughter, grandpa and their dog, Pochi.
While definitely not for everyone and certainly not for anyone without a sense of humor, I still think this was by far worth watching, once at the very least.
