Katanning (known originally as Ke'-tungain or Ke'tungup) was the junction point of three aboriginal tribal grounds whose people lived in the area long before it was occupied by its first white settlers.
Katanning's name originated from the languages of these tribes, and the most popular version of its meaning is meeting place.
The export abbattoir was opened in 1974, and with the arrival of a large number of Christmas Islander workers and their families, Katanning became a town with an ethnic influence.

The founding father of Katanning was Frederick Henry Piesse, an entrepreneurial merchant who, seeing the potential that the Great Southern Railway would bring to the area, designed a mobile store to follow the railway's construction.
The beginnings of Katanning can be described specifically because in May 1888 Piesse had three wagonloads of goods unloaded near Elijah Quartermaine's house and a heap of sandalwood was dumped beside the railway.
The Katanning Unit Hotel was built in 1889 using bricks from Piesse's brickworks and the King George Hostel, on the corner of Albion Street and Austral Terrace, was built for Piesse's son in 1913 and originally used to house mill workers.

Initiated from a community need for a sporting complex and from lack of suitable facilities in the region, it took fifteen years for a vision of a leisure centre to culminate in a multimillion dollar recreational complex which boasts one of the highest usage rates of similar facilities in the state.
Due to the substantial cost of the Katanning Leisure Centre its long term benefits cannot be counted as financial but its significant social and recreational impact on the Katanning and surrounding community is self evident by the amount of people passing through its doors.
The project changed focus on a number of occasions due mainly to the length of time that it took for the vision to become a reality, but in the final and important stages it was once more brought back into focus as a facility designed to meet the needs of the community.
