Nine Portraits / Marc Katano - SF Station Event Listing
Katano’s recent canvases reveal the artist’s preoccupation with the mark-making process and the opportunities it provides for the creation of a controlled, ordered, and coherent form of invented imagery.
The paintings are composed of a matrix of repeated and layered ellipses reduced to their linear outline and rendered in a limited palette of fl, white, and gray.
The leaf-shape is a recognizable theme in Katano’s work and the new paintings demonstrate a significant departure from earlier explorations of this form, previously rendered with earth tones and organic hues.

Katano and colleagues conducted their research using a design similar to that in the earlier study: a retrospective analysis of pathology specimens from a small number of subjects.
Like the authors of the earlier study, Katano and colleagues performed two types of tests in the tissue samples, one to detect an antigen associated with HHV-8, the other to detect HHV-8 DNA.
Both tests failed to detect either the antigen or the DNA in any of the 22 samples from the two groups with some form of pulmonary hypertension, whereas the antigen was detected in the control group of Kaposi's sarcoma tissue samples.

Katano at Wirtz: Former Bay Area, now Los Angeles painter Marc Katano has delivered a handsome group of new works at the Stephen Wirtz Gallery, but they have an unintended theme: good looks as pitfall.

But it counts against Katano's work when a viewer finds, as I did, that he would rather try to sharpen his memory of a Twombly than dwell on the work before him.

Comic relief takes center stage here, and the youthful audience is most alert when "savage slave" Caliban (Robert Saoud) is rolling around on the floor.
The jester Trinculo is also a favorite, especially when the loose-limbed Mimi Jo Katano (in another cross-gender bit of casting) pantomimes a battle with various sea creatures.
In their many scenes together, Steinbach, Saoud, and Katano come off as a more poetic version of the Three Stooges -- with Steinbach supplying some Curly-like grunts and Bronx cheers.

Theatre Mirror Reviews - "The Tempest"
The good but sad news is that Mimi Jo Katano is doing brilliant work in her farewell appearance on a Boston stage.
Katano's undulating eyes and twinkling fingers, her slow pratfalls and round-mouthed takes, and her impeccable timing are all definitely needed to help hold her own in this trio of classic knockabout buffoons.
Steinbach in pasted chin-whiskers and squashed hat is a tipsy Blackbeard wielding a bottle of sack as deftly as a rapier, while Saoud is the ultimate schlimazel always flatly sat on.

ArkivMusic | Bach: Cantatas Vol 1 / Suzuki, Bach Collegium Japan
In BWV 150, soprano Yumiko Kurisu's seamless and spirited rendering of the aria "Doch bin und bleibe ich vergnügt" is a marvel, as is the fifth-movement trio "Zedern müssen von den Winden", expertly performed by countertenor Akira Tachikawa, tenor Koki Katano, and veteran Dutch bass Peter Kooy.
Also noteworthy is Suzuki's brilliant negotiation of the complex rhythms of the chorale "Meine Augen sehen stets zu dem herren", imparting a rarely heard uplifting quality to the setting.
This is the kind of Bach rarely heard anymore--performances that make you want to devote time to them, to listen at lifelike levels and follow the text religiously.
