Short history of the Radziwill Family by Peter Paul Bajer
Among the ranks of the converts, the most prominent and vocal proponents of the faith were Barbara's brother Mikolaj IV the Red, and their cousin Mikolaj Czarny (the Black) Radziwill, the son of Jan Mikolaj.
Those Radziwills who decided to stay in Poland despite prosecution and hardship faced by all 'enemies of the working class', were able to adapt to the new political situation with perseverance and resourcefulness.
Radziwill's exclusivity is also sustained by the upholding of a patriotic/religious ideology associated with the Polish aristocratic circles and based on the principle of noblesse oblige-binding them personally to an intensive service towards the common good.

Polish Music Journal 5.2.02 - Zielinski: The Poles in Music
These men spent there the best part of their lives, and are all of a type which for many centuries was closely welded to a nation rich in folklore and folk-music, and whose activity in art and literature was checked only by the events which made of its noblest sons prisoners, exile, or corpses.
We come now to Prince ANTON HENRY RADZIWILL, [42] born in the duchy of Posen in 1775, descendant of an illustrious family.
Radziwill was a great friend and admirer of Chopin as well as of Goethe; he was an exceptionally fine violoncellist, and he also composed songs, piano pieces, and some orchestral works, the best of which is the music to Goethe's Faust, published in 1835, two years after his death.

The Great Dynasties   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
The Polish szlachta had been enthusiastic for a strengthening of the union between Poland and Lithuania for some time but the immensely rich and powerful Lithuanian magnates, serving only their own interests, were opposed to such a union.
After the death of his first wife, Elizabeth, (1545), Zygmunt August secretly married Barbara Radziwill (1547) from the powerful Lithuanian magnate family.
Once this marriage became known, the szlachta, fearing that the Radziwills, with their new influence, could further delay a union with Lithuania, tried to get the marriage annulled - without success, thus widening the gulf between themselves and the king.
