Katatonia have come a long way since the slow, sorrowful doomdeath sounds of Dance Of December Souls.
Like others in the doomdeath field, the progression has been toward clean vocals and a less heavyhanded (though still metallic) songwriting style, with the new material such as Tonight's Decision and Last Fair Deal Gone Down bordering on alternative metal (albeit a darker, heavier version) at times.
What increasingly sets this band apart from others is the guitar work, a melancholy yet quite tuneful style that is distinctive, interesting, and unique.

Katatonia have condensed their ideas and have utilized the "less is more" approach.
The basic design of this track is quintessential modern-era Katatonia, displaying the identifiable trademarks that have come to define the band’s sound and approach during the course of their development.
Related to recent material while offering slight hints of further exploration of rhythmic structure, this EP suggests that Katatonia are quite far from a fade away in effectiveness, and equally far from distancing themselves from the darkness that shapes their worldview.

Katatonia has always been about creating some of the most depressing and thought provoking music released, but unlike their modern stance - which is in the same genre as early Mogwai and Anathema - their earlier years were full of head on fl metal magic with a strong and palpable doom sound.

The monotone or numb sound Katatonia is known for is present on this album, but all in all it is more a dark and sickening sound that defines this album.
The production is still underground and it could be better, especially the drums sound a bit too weak and clinical at times (some people mistakedly believe that they used a drum computer on this album...), but from the other side, it contributes to the general feeling of "numbness" and apathy that this album breaths.

Katatonia was never one to shy away from referencing artists outside the little world in which they reside — in fact, when the band was still make-up clad, guitarist Anders Nyström unashamedly mentioned The Cure and Joy Division in interviews.
Opening track, “Dispossession,” is a massive wave of traditional Katatonia craftsmanship, showcasing guitarists Nyström and Norrman’s ability to effortlessly shift jaw-dropping melodic work with quiet sustain to such an extent that the movements fluidly transcend from one to other.
Furthermore, a track such as this only proves that Katatonia are, indeed, moving their songwriting out of the underground, which has for the last 10 years embraced them.

Not that that is the case here, but it really is a bummer, when you slowly get lost in songs like “Leaders,” “Deliberation,” and “Rusted” where a somber and moody melody creeps up your spine while dense guitar riffs wrap your eardrums only to be abruptly interrupted.
Luckily for the listener, Katatonia does not overload each track with unnecessary grimness and the beautiful rhythms that embellish each track make of the record a sulfur-scented passing wind.
Katatonia counter balances much of the dark lyrical aspects of the record with a quick verse-chorus-verse MO (that’s ‘modus operandi’ for the ignoramus) and a direct guitar tone that speaks and relates directly into the ears of the listener.
