Katazome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Katazome (型染め) is a Japanese method of dyeing fabrics using a resist paste applied through a stencil.
Katazome on thin fabrics shows a pattern through to the back; on thicker or more tightly woven fabrics, the reverse side is a solid color, usually indigo blue for cotton fabrics.
Besides cotton, katazome has been used to decorate linen, silk and fabrics that are all or partially synthetic.

In katazome, to dye the cloth, the fabric can be dipped into a large vat of color until the desired color is achieved.

KATAZOME - Meiji-period hand-made paper stencils for decorations of textiles
Katazome are Japanese paper stencils on handmade mulberry (shibugami) paper, used in the process of dyeing textiles (for kimonos, e.g.).
These particularly beautiful designs are the result of an amazing artistic mastership, the quality of carving is outstanding. The appeal of katazome to us, more than one hundred years after their creation, is a timeless one, their fascination as strong as in the days they were made, not only because the effects look so modern.
Katazome of this large size were designed by the most talented Japanese designers and skilled craftsmen, and intended for the production of the most luxurious textiles, or as single works of design art.

Katazome panels are usually from futon, or quilt, covers.
Dimensions are approximate, because Japanese looms vary in width, and because when the futon is taken apart for laundering, the panels are sometimes trimmed, or otherwise altered in the process.
Katazome is wonderful in patchwork, and the patterns are set off well when solid or uniformly small-patterned fabrics.

 Introducing Bingata Katazome
Bingata Katazome is a Japanese method of dyeing fabric using a resist paste applied thorough a stencil.
The central feature of the Bingata Katazome method is the use of a resist paste made from a steamed mixture of rice flour and rice bran.
This sticky paste is forced through a cut paper stencil onto a piece of fabric, the stencil is removed, and the paste remaining on the fabric is allowed to dry.

The shubigami paper consists of several layers of mulberry paper laminated with a tannin such as persimmon juice and then smoked to produce a leather-like surface that is strong and waterproof.
For the convenience of the katazome artists, the images of the mylar stencils can be produced as Japanese silk stencils; however, because the Japanese silk stencils do not require as many bridges for support of the design, they cannot be produced in mylar without adaptation of the design.
This type of stencil was primarily used in the katazome process using rice paste as a resist while applying color to fabric.

About the Artists - Sadao Watanabe
It is this art form that is known as katazome, a process by which the picture is dyed instead of being painted or block printed.
Watanabe is one of the few masters of katazome, a 400 year old art form in which the picture is dyed onto paper through a pattern.
The paste, and the dye that covers it, are washed away and the remaining dye presents a stenciled picture.

Most of Miller’s patterns, like those of traditional Japanese katazome, are inspired by natural sources, from the vascular patterns of leaves to the elegant swoops of a peacock’s feather.
Many of her images are inspired by her background as a marine biologist, including frolicking salmon and the rippled ridges of a seashell.
Although indigo dyeing is a common type of katazome, Miller also uses the stencil technique with other colored dyes, creating a huge variety of textile art.

 Japanese Textile Dyeing
Teachers would be able to learn and pass on two methods of using paste resist in designing fabrics--stencil (Katazome) and free-hand application (Tsutsugaki).
For Katazome (stencil), the paste should be thick enough to push through the stencil, but not too thick so that it’s sticky and hard to use.
For Tsutsugaki, the hand application method, the paste should be thin enough so that it can easily pass through the pastry tube and flow onto the fabric but not too thin so that it runs out of control.

Also called stencil dyeing, katazome is a versatile technique used in fabric design.
She combines printmaking, woodcut and painting with katazome - which employs a resist paste applied through a stencil, left to dry, then, once painted, is washed off, revealing the surface beneath.
The inspiration for this series comes from the rambling garden of her home in Mt. Airy – where she lives with her husband, young children, several rabbits, cats and a newly adopted Labrador Retriever.

Goldsmith, who studied katazome under professional artists in her native Japan, says it appealed to her as an art form because of its emphasis on balance, rhythm and patience.
Before she creates a katazome, Goldsmith envisions patterns and images in her mind, transfers them to paper stencils, and lays the stencils out in just the right pattern.
Forget-me-nots, fuchsias, lilies, roses and hydrangeas are among the flowers she portrays, sometimes brightly, sometimes in muted tones.
