Elephant Band / Kate Maki Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Kate Maki cast off the yoke of a day job last year to release her debut CD, Confusion Unlimited, an impressive collection of mature, yet buoyant alt-country songs.
Maki's new disc is a more intense affair: the lyrics are still good-natured and the music is true to the roots/alt-country code, but the production is considerably more lush -- at times taking the disc a few steps closer to the mainstream -- and the words are a little more sober and world weary.
Maki is a confident and deft songwriter, and she has a tremendous voice -- one that's a little deeper this time around, thanks to all those Marlboros, no doubt.

In the summer of 2003, Sudburian Kate Maki made the bold decision to leave her comfortable job as a grade school teacher and set out to pursue a career in music.
Maki, a former teacher, turned out to be a major contender at last year's NXNE festival in Toronto with her take on the alt-country-rock genre.
Maki's first CD, Confusion Unlimited, afforded her the opportunity to regularly travel across the country and open for some of country's greatest artists.

The tour was notorious for generating the surreal flower-child hangover chaos, but Maki was struck by the idea that these performers, who were usually on the road and on stage alone, had created a situation that offered opportunities for collaboration and sharing the weight.
Although everyone was immediately taken by Maki’s recruitment pitch, it was initially unclear how they would support each other in practice.

Much like her childhood home of Sudbury, Ontario, the music of singer-songwriter Kate Maki is stark and sadly beautiful.
Her passion for music was born early on, when as a toddler she would steady herself at the family turntable to spin hits from 70?s darlings Boney M. Kate?s passion and talents would continue to grow during her high school years where she began writing songs on guitar and piano.

NXNE: Kate Maki, Feist, Nathan Lawr: Live Review : Soul Shine Magazine
"I have a contest for you guys, 'cause I'm a teacher and I'm a geek!" Kate Maki challenges her audience, "Who can guess this person?" The mystery is solved when Jim Bryson is revealed as her partner on stage.
Charming, chatty and easily likeable, Maki drew the crowd in at Reverb last Friday night with her candid bantering, rollicking tunes and a few history lessons.
I'm sure she was a lovely teacher, but Maki seems so happy performing, her country roots sound is so natural and fresh, and her energy so infectious, it's clear that she is in her element up on stage - although she manages to combine the two worlds in a strangely effortless way.

 Eye Weekly - Kate Maki - 12.04.03
As she did in her collegiate studies, Maki is still examining the intricacies and impulses that govern human emotional response, only now she's doing it through the lens of an empty shot glass.
She says her winsome debut disc, Confusion Unlimited, was inspired by "crappy stuff, mainly to do with love, loss and death," but Maki stares down the dark stuff with a wry smirk instead of a slit wrist.
Buoyed by rave reviews in Halifax (where she began performing at open-mic nights in the early '90s) and Ottawa (where her recording career began in earnest), Maki's seen Confusion Unlimited sell out its first run of 1,000 copies, and with the sales and positive press have come murmurs of a Kathleen Edwards-style breakthrough.

Reminiscent of Harmer's world-weary sighs, Maki's mastered a kind of bored-but-hurtin' belting technique – also check the slight aloofness of Stars' Amy Millan or Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval – that wraps its tobacco-stained fingers around your heart and squeezes till you cry.
