Kate Seredy's work is nowhere near as popular with children as are the works of Blume, Cleary, Dahl, and Wilder.
Jansci and Cousin Kate from Budapest deserve to be considered along with Peter and Fudge, Henry, Ramona, and Ribsy, Charlie and Willy Wonka, and the Ingalls family as among the greatest characters in children's fiction.
Kate seems bad at first-taking over their wagon and running away with it, splitting her skirts, climbing the rafters for sausage, and racing her boy cousin.

Summary: Kate Seredy draws from her Hungarian upbringing in this story of Jancsi and his spirited cousin Kate, who comes from the city of Budapest to spend the summer with Jancsi's family in the country.
Kate catches the gypsies stealing a pig and chickens and rather than being tied up, gagged and thrown into the hayloft, she goes with them for a brief but scary time.
When Kate goes swimming in an unfamiliar place, and gets caught in a strong current, she is in grave danger but is rescued by Jansci.

 Book Summary:  The Good Master
She arrives with a letter from her father, who explains that Kate is more than a delicate child in need of fresh country air; in fact, she needs a strong hand to help control her incredible, disobedient, headstrong ways.
At first, Kate and her cousin Jancsi do not get along very well, but as the story develops and Kate is in admiration of her cousin’s skill with the horses, she is won over.
In the end, Kate’s father comes to visit and is so taken by the transformation in his daughter that he decides to stay in the country from whence he comes with his brother’s family.

Kate Seredy was born November 10, 1899 in Budapest, Hungary to Louis Peter (a teacher) and Anna (Irany) Seredy.
Her family collectively at one time or another decided that she should be a teacher, a nurse, a dress designer, a plain wife complete with children, a thorn-in-the-side of any government in power at any given moment, and a painter.
Seredy attended the Academy of Arts in Budapest for six years where she received her art teacher's diploma.

Kate has become rude, stubborn, and willful, so her father sends her to his brother`s Hungarian farm in hopes of taming her a bit.
That is not to say that Kate doesn`t find ways of keeping the family hopping with her unanticipated antics and responses.
Her cousin Jancsi, in particular, seems to be brought unwittingly into her "chaos potential." Strong family values, great insights into Hungarian farm life at the turn of the century, and rich examples of longsuffering love are key reasons why this is a Newbery Honor winner.
