Leopold will marry Miss Tree, and do his best to make her happy (because he is an honorable man, and although she is an awkward girl she would be so thrilled with the possibility of being a duchess that she would do whatever she could to make him happy).
Kate needs something which will enable her to recognize that Leopold is for real, which will convince her that he really is from the past; and she needs to see that she is passing up what she really wants in favor of the substitute she created for it.
Leopold never saw Kate in the past until after he met her in the future, because she was not at the party until the very last moment, after all the dancing had ended.

Leopold is obviously shocked by his new surroundings, and learns that it was Stuart who discovered the rip in the fabric of time that's allowed their travel.
Kate activates a dog's obedience collar and then does so again when she knows that Stuart is holding it, thus giving him a shock.
After Leopold tucks Kate into bed, she sleepily asks him to stay, so he takes off his shoes and climbs under the sheets with her (both are clothed) and they snuggle (we don't know if anything else occurs, but it doesn't seem like it does).

Kate does not believe either Stuart of Leopold's story that he is from the past, and because she met him essentially through Stuart, she takes an instant disliking to him (of course).
However, Leopold is a handsome, dashing duke, and his 19th Century charm and politeness (he rises when a woman leaves the table,...) slowly wins her over (of course).
Leopold's experiences in the new world, which constitute a decent chunk of the movie, are not that amusing.

Goofs: Continuity: When Kate is eating dinner on the rooftop, the strap of her dress is alternately on/off her shoulder between shots.
Nobody finds much to remark upon about Leopold's distinctive choice of attire or modes of address, and even in his anachronistic ways he is still a delightful companion to the descendants who surround him.
Leopold is a man of great intelligence and dignity who nevertheless displays a completely disarming 'boyish enthusiasm' every now and again, played extremely well by Jackman.

"Kate and Leopold" also has a few other tasks to keep itself busy before the predictable ending: Jackman's entry into modern society gets some solid laughs - while not laugh-out-loud funny, Jackman's performance makes the material at least moderately amusing (certainly much better than the awful time-travel comedy "Just Visiting").
"Kate and Leopold" runs nearly two hours, which is a good chunk more time than these films usually run.

Leopold at first befuddles and then impresses everyone with his noble bearing and courtly manners (not to mention the way he combines his 1876 waistcoat with, say, one of Stuart's dress shirts and neckties -- mixing contemporary clothing with vintage, he's right in tune with Vogue magazine).
The problem with "Kate & Leopold" is that although this is supposed to be a romantic comedy, the best scenes are the ones in which there's no Ryan.
