		It is estimated that 100,000 of the population of 125,000 left the island soon after the earthquake looking for a new life elsewhere.
		The forest fire of the 1990s caused damage to the island's forests and bushes, especially a small scar north of Troianata, and a large area of damage extending from Kateleios north to west of Tzanata, ruining about 30 square kilometres of forest and bushes and resulting in the loss of some properties.
		The forest fire scar was seen for a couple of years.

	HMC - ACTIVITIES
		The basement still houses the island's Notarized Archives dating from 1530 up until the time of the Union of the Ionian Islands with Greece.
		There is a concert hall on the ground floor with two pianos, the temple of the original St. Andrew's Church in Kateleios donated by the Sdrin Family, and, a part of the katholikon wall of St. Andrew's at Karya dated to the 12th century.
		The ground floor also houses the Vallianos Brothers Gallery Hall which is filled with magnificent hagiographic art of the 15th to the 18th centuries, as well as other ecclesiastic objects.

		During our visit we were shown and updated on the work that the Environmental Center takes up and is focused on the protection of the Marine environment and the Loggerhead Sea turtles (Caretta Caretta).
		We also participated in the beach cleaning strategy that this NGO has already started for this year and all of us felt really proud to assisst the people and volunteers of Kateleios group.
		We thank them for giving us this chance to become useful to the environment, the local community as well as the turtles that prefer visiting the beaches of this area in order to give birth to their hatchelings.
