Buddhism / list of buddhist topics / kathavatthu
Kathavatthu (Pāli), literally "Points of Controversy", is one of the seven books in the Theravada Abhidhamma Pitaka.
The Kathavatthu was compiled in order to clarify the various points of controversy regarding Dhamma that had arisen among the schools of Nikaya Buddhism.
Scholars sometimes point to the inclusion of the Kathavatthu in the Tipitaka as an indication that the Pāli Canon was more 'open' than orthodox Theravadin tradition has indicated, and as illustrative of the process of codifying new texts as canonical.

Kathavatthu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
According to tradition, this work was compiled by the venerable Moggaliputta Tissa in his role as leader of the Third Council, which took place sometime in the 3rd Century BCE.
The Kathavatthu was compiled in order to clarify the various points of controversy regarding Dhamma that had arisen amongst the early Buddhist schools.
Scholars sometimes also point to the inclusion of some obviously later (relatively new) sections of the Kathavatthu in the Tipitaka as an indication that the Pāli Canon was more 'open' than has sometimes been thought, and as illustrative of the process of codifying new texts as canonical.

 CHRONOLOGY OF THE PALI CANON
The existence of this sutta previous to the reign of king Asoka is clearly proved by certain quotations in the Kathavatthu from it.
In the Kathavatthu, there are quotations the sources of which can now be traced in some of the passages in the Vinaya Pitaka, Digha Nikaya, the Majjhima Nikaya, the Samyutta Nikaya, the Anguttara Nikaya and some of the books of the Khuddaka Nikaya.
As the passages are quoted in the Kathavatthu without any mention of the sources, rather as wellknown and authoritative words of the Buddha, it cannot be definitely maintained that the quotations were cited from the canonical texts in which the individual passages are traceable.

while the Kathavatthu is a text of thirty five bhanavaras in the light of a statement given at the end of the text itself.

In contrast, the Theravadins include it in the objective field of mental objects (dhammayatana), which means that it is not visible but can be cognized only as an object of mind-consciousness.
It is this latter kind of space that came to be elevated in the Milindapanha almost to the level of an unconditioned dhamma.
And it is also this same space that the Kathavatthu describes as neither conditioned nor unconditioned, and this, as the commentary says, means that it is a conceptual construct.

This study attempt to analyse those controversies and to find out whether the same are in time with basic tenets of early Buddhism i.e., is combination of Theravada and Vibhajjavada.

Unlike the Suttas, these are not records of discourses and discussions occurring in real-life settings; they are, rather, full-blown treatises in which the principles of the doctrine have been methodically organized, minutely defined, and meticulously tabulated and classified.
The Kathavatthu, "Points of Controversy," is a polemical treatise ascribed to the Elder Moggaliputta Tissa.
He is said to have compiled it during the time of Emperor Asoka, 218 years after the Buddha's Parinibbana, in order to refute the heterodox opinions of the Buddhist schools outside the Theravadin fold.

p.367 A few Evidences on the Age of the Kathavatthu (i) Tradition We have to depend mainly on the Ceylonese tradition for ascertaining the time of composition of the Kathavatthu, one of the seven treatises of the Abhidhamma Pitaka.
The tradition(1) tells us that the controversies embodied in the K. took place at the Third Buddhist Council, convened in the 17th regnal year of king Asoka.
Thus an examination of some of the materials of the K. and the Asokan edicts shows that the compilation of the K. was made, at least in part, somewhere in the reign of king Asoka.
