Katherine, with a population of over 6 000, is the third largest town in the Northern Territory.
The Katherine River, after which the town and the nearby gorge take their names, was named by John McDouall Stuart when he passed through the area in 1862 on his sixth and successful journey across the continent.
The starting point for any visitor to Katherine is at the south of the town where, on the eastern side of the Stuart Highway, the Katherine Tourist Information Centre is located and, on the western side of the Highway, at the BP Garage, where tours of Katherine Gorge can be booked.

Katherine Gorge actually consists of 13 gorges, all created by the same river as it sliced through sandstone over millions of years.
The water between gorges is so shallow that even canoes cannot cross, though it's not so much that we are any closer to the top of the gorge as it is that the riverbed has formed a natural dam of sorts.
We are certainly still well within a gorge during the transition; if the entire string of 13 gorges is like this one, then Katherine Gorge seems more likely to be one giant gorge split into 13 navigable segments.

I drove from Kununurra to Katherine through the most amazing scenery, stopping for a couple of walks in the Gregory National Park, home to the Stokes Range and the Escarpment, the latter walk ending in a beautiful view over the Victoria River valley.
Katherine Gorge is the main attraction of Nitmiluk National Park, and I set off at 8.10am to explore the area, initially heading for Smitt's Rock, some 11.3km along the gorge.
The actual gorge is always flowing, so you can't walk down it (though you can take boat tours and hire canoes, a rather attractive idea in retrospect); there is, however, a long trail that goes parallel to the river, from which you can duck off down creek beds to the gorge proper.

Often described as thirteen gorges, it is in fact one continuous cleft, turning left and right along fault lines and separated during the dry season by rock bars.
Away from the gorge itself, the terrain is rough and very dry; be sure to wear sturdy footwear and a hat, and carry plenty of water.
Canoeing up the gorge is an option for the more energetic, but don’t expect to paddle up to the “thirteenth” in a day; canoeing is hard work for unaccustomed arms and shoulders, especially against the breeze which wafts down the gorge.

The Gorge twists and turns over several kilometres and the deeper you go, I assumed the harder the rock hopping would be, but overall it is a very very easy walk.
We came to a narrower section of the Gorge where you had no choice but to swim about 10 metres to a lovely sandy area to continue the adventure.
But for any Katherine Locals who have never stopped off with the family for a peek, we can thoroughly recommend it as one of the Katherine Regions "Must See and easy to do".
