Katherine Kurtz, Deryni Tales   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Kurtz encourages this; she sees fan fiction as "a vehicle of growth that might even make a real contribution to the betterment of the reader's mind-set." Since 1978, Kurtz has published Deryni Archives: The Magazine as a platform for readers to contribute to the Deryni canon.
Kurtz also includes a new story of her own, "The Green Tower," that serves as something of a prequel to her forthcoming Deryni novel.
Katherine Kurtz's great strength is character development, and the authors in this anthology share that strength.

 Raven's Reviews: Katherine Kurtz
Kurtz is the author of the Deryni series, a a sequence of trilogies in the same world built around two different time periods.
Yet Kurtz offers a ray of hope: the main characters of her novels may be caught up in political intrigue, but most of them desperately want peace.
Kurtz's background in history and religion is strong and well-displayed in these novels.

Katherine Kurtz, St. Patrick's Gargoyle   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
According to Kurtz, all of the avenging angels whose task it was to smite the wicked in the bad old days have been reassigned in our post-Christ world.
Although the gargoyles and their motivations are firmly rooted in Christian history and mythology, Kurtz plays fast and loose with the tradition.
It is doubtful whether the reader will glean any deep meaning from the story, but the exploration of long-forgotten and just-possibly-imaginary underground passages and crannies of Dublin is delightful, and the characters are likable enough to spend a long evening curled up with.

atherine Kurtz was born in Coral Gables, Florida during a hurricane, and likes to think this was an auspicious introduction to the world.
She read honours humanities at the University of Miami, from which she received a B.S. in chemistry, and attended medical school for a year before deciding she would rather write about medicine than practice it.
Kurtz lives in a gothic revival house just south of Dublin with her husband, author and screen-writer Scott MacMillan, their computer programmer son Cameron, four cats, and at least two resident ghosts--the latter of whom seem to approve of the restoration work being done to their house by the MacMillans.

Kurtz's observations about prejudice and discrimination are obscured at times by her protagonists' disregard for the consequences of their own actions.
Many of the deficiencies that may marr Kurtz's characterizations of the good guys are gloriously absent among her villains; the Regents are a fascinating cross section of corrupt humanity.
The Bastard Prince is my favorite of Katherine Kurtz's novels dealing with her earlier time frame of history and characters.

Katherine Kurtz & Robert Reginald: Codex Derynianus
Katherine Kurtz's long-running Deryni series is, perhaps, one of the most detailed and realistic depictions of Medieval society in modern fantasy.
With the success of Kurtz's novels, she began exploring the era immediately prior to the Deryni persecution.
Kurtz has now elected, with the assistance of Borgo Press's Robert Reginald, to make much of this background available to her readers in a (for now) limited edition book, the Codex Derynianus.

Katherine mentioned in the anthology Deryni Archives that this story was not reprinted because it will be expanded upon and superceded by the Childe Morgan trilogy.
It was originally edited by Kurtz herself, but after 10 issues, she handed it over to someone else to concentrate on her own writing, coinciding with her move to Ireland.
Katherine Kurtz has, in the past, stated several times that the theory advanced in High Deryni is in fact only a theory and should not be considered a definitive look at how things happen; she's indicated that indeed several genes are likely to be responsible, as suggested above, or that things are very complex.
