Katherine van Wormer grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana and received her B.A. in English from the University of North Carolina and went to get a postgraduate degree in education from Queen’s University, Belfast, Northern Ireland; a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Georgia and finally an MSSW from the University of Tennessee.
Active in the civil rights and peace movements at home and in Northern Ireland, Katherine van Wormer continues to work for peace.
Her academic work has been mostly in the area of women in prison and alcoholism treatment.

Katherine van Wormer might be a pacifist, but she apparently has started a war over the military's presence on college campuses.
Van Wormer wrote a letter to the editor to the U.S. News and World Report concerning an article in the magazine about ROTC scholarships and how they are a means of providing funds for a college education.
In her letter, van Wormer said the education associated with ROTC is a "contradiction to the academic freedom enjoyed at university campuses; military training on college campuses, in fact, makes a mockery of education."

Van Wormer observers that Bush's pompous pledge: "We must be prepared to stop rogue states and their terrorist clients before they are able to threaten or use weapons of mass destruction" is a projection from the world's leading rogue state preparing to attack with nuclear weapons.
Van Wormer describes "years of binge drinking starting in college, at least one conviction for DUI in 1976 in Maine, and one arrest before that for a drunken episode involving theft of a Christmas wreath." She adds:
Van Wormer characterizes this damage as "barely noticeable but meaningful." Researchers have found that brain chemistry irregularities caused by long bouts of drinking or drug abuse cause "messages in one part of the brain to become stuck there.

The difference between van Wormer and Starr is that she has not been given a multi-million dollar budget to go fishing for slime, and the obsessive attention of half the U.S Congress.

Dr. van Wormer did a participant-observation study at the women's prison in Alabama and is a professor of social work at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls.
