Agnes O'Connell, the Clare woman who brought her 40-strong London-Irish Girls Pipe Band to the Claremorris Ham Fair on an annual basis during the 1970s, died recently in London at the age of 84.
She was the 12th of 13 children born to Margaret Kiniry and Michael O'Connell and from an early age showed a great interest and fondness for Irish dancing, music and traditions.
She once told me that Eileen Deignean, one of her young pupils, announced in front of the class one evening "Agnes is marrying a very fat man - a boxer - what a pair!" They had great times together and they established the London Irish Girl Pipers Band and the rest is history.
