Governor Blanco is still grappling with the massive damage to the State of Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina which struck Louisiana on August 29, 2005.
Governor Blanco was also criticized for allegedly having only a minor subset of her available National Guard troops standing by on ready, and for not being able to provide relief supplies and standby medical or other first responder personnel to New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin for the victims of the hurricane.
On June 19, 2006, Blanco signed into law a ban on most forms of abortion (unless the life of the mother was in danger or her health would be permanently damaged) once it passed the state legislature.

Blanco has been burdened by the sluggish pace of recovery and by pressure within the Democratic Party, but she said she wanted to push through important initiatives without having to worry about political considerations.

The Washington Post was one among many papers that suggested that Blanco's blistering attack, late into the campaign, on Bobby Jindal's record as the state's secretary of health had much to do with helping voters making up their minds.
The Times Picayune elaborated on that theme; it added that Blanco's final televised appearance, which included an emotional moment in which she tearfully recalled the death of her son in an accident at work, put a human face on the Democratic candidate that contrasted with Jindal's appearance of a crisp-talking, number-crunching policy wonk.
One of the few profiles of the victorious candidate appears in USA Today, which suggests that Blanco came across as a trustworthy candidate with no skeletons in her closet -- a huge asset in a state that boasts one governor who was assassinated and another who is now spending time in a federal prison.
