In a Muslim majority state, Kathua, like the Jammu region, is overwhelmingly Hindu, the religion practiced by 91% of its district population.

He allegedly abused and misbehaved with a girl student of Kathua college and later molested her on Tuesday evening.

In a major success, Kathua police have arrested the district’s "most wanted" militant, Mohd Shabir, a ‘supreme commander’ of Hizbul Mujahideen outfit from a Guest House in Srinagar where he was recuperating from a bullet injury.
Mohd Shabir son of Munawar Din, a resident of Loang in Bani tehsil, was one among the eight "most wanted" militants in Kathua district and was being searched by the police frequently in Billawar and Bani forests, where he had developed several "safer hideouts" for his outfit.
Police sources told EXCELSIOR that Mohd Shabir was arrested from Iqbal Guest House in Srinagar by a Kathua police team on a specific information developed by the district police officers that Shabir was recuperating in the Guest House with the help of a Sarpanch and domestic servant of a VIP.

For the third consecutive day today, the security forces and militants are battling it out in the Ghati forests of Kathua district with the Army taking over the entire command and launching an assault on the holed-up militants.
The Kathua operation, the longest anti-militancy drive of this year so far, started on Tuesday evening at 3.30 p.m.
The SSP, Kathua, Manish Sinha claimed that all the escape routes had been sealed and that the militants would be killed when their ammunition got exhausted.

Four more local harbourers of the terrorists have also been identified by police but they were absconding from their houses, SP Kathua said, adding all of them were Kashmiris settled at Khaned, Basantgarh.

The operations were abandoned a day after the Indian army on Sunday sent 500 battle-hardened Gurkha soldiers into the Kathua forests where the militants had held 1,500 soldiers at bay since last Tuesday.
Police chief Gupta said the troops who laid siege to Kathua's virtually impregnable Ghati forests were being sent back to barracks.
The Kathua operations led to the death of one soldier and injuries to seven policemen who came into the line of fire of the militants.

Jammu: At least eight militants were killed and three security personnel injured in a fierce encounter in Gullak village of Kathua district on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the police, a group of militants who recently sneaked into the State from Pakistan, on Tuesday night asked for shelter in a house in the village, about 65 km, south of Jammu and about 30 km from the Indo-Pakistan border.
The police said, "the militants might have infiltrated recently from Pakistan, and that all killed militants were foreigners." The police have recovered eight AK 47 rifles, five UBGLs, one Pika and three radio sets, besides some ration, clothings and currency.

JAMMU: Additional troops were on Thursday rushed to Kathua where seven Lashker-e-Taiba militants continued to engage security forces in possibly the longest ever gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir which entered the third day.
Around 300 Army personnel were sent to Ghati area of Kathua to reinforce the security grid thrown around the bushes from where the hiding militants are firing continuously at the security forces, hampering their advance, defence sources said.
Two of the terrorists have been seriously injured in the encounter, the sources said quoting intercepts sent by militants to their commanders across the border.
