Katie Webster was born Kathryn Jewel Thorne on January 9, 1939 in Houston, Texas.
Katie's mother Myrtle played spirituals and classical music and was responsible for her musical training.
Webster began her professional music career at age 13 traveling the "crawfish circuit" from Dallas to New Orleans with a jazz band.

Katie Webster was a hard-hitting blues and boogie-woogie pianist who earned her reputation as the "Swamp Boogie Queen" in the course of playing on well over 500 records as a session musician in the 50s and early 60s.
The pianist led her own band, The Uptighters, throughout this period, and was playing at the Bamboo Club in Lake Charles in 1964 when she came to the notice of singer Otis Redding.
Katie Webster died of heart failure at her home in League City, near her native Houston.

Webster recorded prolifically for Excello and Goldband during the '50s and '60s and was a member of Otis Redding's band in the late '60s.
Katie enjoyed a successful solo career in the 1980s, releasing albums on Arhoolie and a number of European labels.
