  Katla's Homepage
In the Saga, Katla is a sorceress, a witch who at first with wit and smart magick hides her child from the men who want to kill it.
Katla expects that to happen and hides her child in a different place and in a different manner every time and she knows to work a different magick too.
Katla is still active, she will usually errupt every 50 years, pretty regularly as far as people record history: she will hurl masses of ice far out into the sea on the southern coast of the island.

 Katla
Katla is one of the most active volcanoes in Iceland, with two eruptions each century on average.
The volcanic centre is located on the east margin of the eastern volcanic zone in Iceland, above a junction of linear rift tectonics and a steep increase in crustal thickness, compared to the rift zone north of the volcano.
In spite of the dominating basaltic composition of magma, all eruptions are highly explosive due to the subglacial mode of extrusion.

The volcano Katla, in the Myrdalsjokull glacier, has erupted on average every 40 - 80 years.
Katla is one of the most famous volcanoes in the country, and its eruptions usually have very serious consequences; the glacier above the volcanic vent melts and the melt-water collects under the ice-cap until it makes its way out under the edge in a violent flood.

Tephra from this large explosive eruption of Katla volcano was deposited on land and in the ocean basins adjacent to Iceland, by a number of depositional processes.
The fallout dispersal of Katla tephra to the north-east and east is in accordance with the major distribution of tephra fall which has been produced by recent explosive eruptions in Iceland and deposited in surface sediment (Kellogg 1973) and on land (Thorarinsson 1967; Sparks et al 1981).

Katla seismicity has a seasonal pattern, particularly in the Goðabunga area earthquakes concentrate in the latter part of the year.
The seismicity is interpreted to be related to the deloading of the thin crust above the magma chamber due to the summer melting of the ice cap, and to high groundwater pressure in the caldera roof at the same time (Einarsson and Brandsdóttir 2000).
