Katmai National Park and Preserve is a United States National Park in Alaska, notable for the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes and for its brown bears.
Katmai is also well known for brown bears and the salmon which attract both bears and people.
Originally, on September 24, 1918, the area was designated a national monument to protect the area around the major 1912 volcanic eruption of Novarupta, which formed the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, a forty square mile (100 km²), 100 to 700 foot deep, pyroclastic flow.

Archeologists have discovered remains of nomadic hunters' camps dating back 9,000 years in the interior lake region of the Park, while impressive coastal sites show that marine sea mammal hunters were established along the Katmai Coast by 7,000 years ago.
Large Native villages persisted along this Coast until Russian contact in the late 1700s, and were not completely abandoned until after Novarupta's cataclysmic eruption.

In June of 1912 Katmai's Novarupta Volcano erupted with a force that had only been matched by one other volcanic eruption in recorded history, the eruption of Greece's Santorini Volcano in 1500 B.C. In the aftermath of the eruption innumerable holes and cracks developed in the volcanic ash deposits covering the valleys surrounding Novarupta.
The gas and steam escaping from heated underground water inspired Robert Griggs of the National geographic Society to name the active landscape the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes.
