Separated by the steep gorge of the Tembi valley and the Pinios River raise the mountains of the Ossa in the south and the mighty peaks of the Olympos mountain range towards the north from the coastal plains of the Aegean Sea.
Mount Olympos’ 3000 meter high summits are said to be saturated by the nectar of the ancient Greek gods.
This ancient image of the holy mountain and its uncounted natural treasures are today protected by the Mt. Olympos National Park (since 1938) and the flanks of the mountain known as Kato Olympos or Lower Olympos has been declared a biosphere reserve.

Traditionally regarded as the heavenly abode of the Greek gods and the site of the throne of Zeus, Olympos seems to have originally existed as an idealized mountain that only later came to be associated with a specific peak.
The most favored mythological choice is the tallest mountain range in Greece, the Olympos massif, 100 kilometers southwest of the city of Thessaloniki in northern Greece.
These gods and goddesses did not actually live upon Olympos, rather the ancient myth can be understood to be a metaphor for the power of the sacred mountain.
