Katsina is an old city of Northern Nigeria 160 miles East of the city of Sokoto, and 84 m.
Katsina is capital of Katsina State and the centre of an agricultural region producing groundnuts, cotton, hides, millet and guinea corn.
From the 17th to the 18th century, Katsina was the commercial heart of hausaland and became the largest of the seven Hausa city-states.

Historical Development: Katsina was one of the prejihad hausa city states which was conquered and annexed into the Sokoto caliphate by Mallam Urnmarun Dallaji in the early part of the 19th Century.
Katsina State came into existence on the 23rd of September, 1987 covering the same area of the former Katsina Province of the defunct Northern Region.
The legislature is headed by the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, his deputy, chief whip, majority and minority leaders; a registrar of the house serves as the Secretary and head of the non legislative officers.

Hassan in a petition he reportedly wrote to the Sharia Court in Katsina state alleging that the governor and his deputy had breached the Sharia legal system to which both men as foremost functionaries of the state gave their consent by signing it into law in Katsina state.
The Katsina state government had recently come under an international condemnation when a Sharia court in the state condemned a 31 year old woman, Amina Lawal to death by stoning for having a child outside wedlock.
Before Alhaji Musa Hassan took his case against the Katsina state governor and his deputy to the Sharia courts the trend in the calibre of persons sentenced under these religious law was a motley collection of illiterate rural dwellers who were mostly women purportedly caught in adulterous relationships in which the men were let off.

Ms Ibrahim, the lawyer, told the press in Katsina that the appeal court's decision had been "a victory" for law, for justice and for dignity and fundamental human rights.
According to the original ruling, the father of Ms Lawal's child had not committed a criminal act, only she was to face criminal charges.
Amnesty added that the federal government of Nigeria now should take steps to abolish the death penalty and amend all pieces of legislation which introduce the death penalty as well as cruel, inhuman and degrading punishments at all levels of the Nigerian legislation, including the Shari'a penal legislation.

Under the Katsina regional law, admitting to having a baby amounts to a confession to the crime of adultery.
The softly spoken and largely unschooled Lawal told AFP that her main worries were the strain the case was putting on her parents and what would happen to her baby daughter Wasila if she is put to death.
A spokesperson for the Katsina State authorities, Ibrahim Abdullahi, said that the Governor would not intefere in the appeal process, and predicted that if the appeal was turned down, Amina Lawal would be executed.
