		The facility at Katunayake is both a civilian airport and the SLAF's main base on the island.
		Katunayake is said to be the home of the SLAF's recently acquired Russian and Israeli-manufactured fighter bombers because it has the only runway long enough to handle these supersonic aircraft when carrying a full bomb load.
		Meanwhile, Katunayake is also Sri Lanka's sole international airport, serving both as an entry point into the country for tourists, but also as a transit hub for travellers enroute to the Far East and Maldives.

		It will just take 30 minutes to fly from Katunayake to the Victoria Golf Course and the pier which will be built is close to the club and in fact walking distance.
		It is unbelievable that the whole journey from the Katunayake international airport to the Victoria golf course would take around 40 minutes which is the time taken from Kandy to the golf course by which is bumpy and if do not get caught to traffic snarls and jams.

	Sri Lanka, since 1971
		Five MiG-17Fs, a MiG-15UTI and a group of Russian pilots arrived in Katunayake AB on 22 April 1971, and were subordinated to the 6 Sqn SLAF.
		All the SLAF transports saw heavy service while supporting the air-bridge from Katunayake AB to Jaffna, in the mid-1990s: they were used for hauling reinforcements and supplies to Jaffna, and evacuating casualties to such a extension that several aircraft suffered corrosion damage from blood.
		The unit was based in Katunayake AB and was immediately rushed into extensive strikes against LTTE bases and positions.
