While retaining a solid rock foundation, the music finds Walter Becker and Donald Fagen engaging their jazz influences more successfully than ever; Fagen's piano fills alone are some of the most impressive music laid to tape in the '70s.
"Katy Lied" is the best album Steely Dan did, improving even on "Pretzel Logic".
Katy Lied is a treasure, a fine compilation of smooth rock with great lyrics, guitar solos, and jazzy overtones.

Katy Lied - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Originally released in March 1975, Katy Lied was the fourth album to be released by rock group Steely Dan.
Though it went gold and peaked at #13 on the charts, Becker and Fagen weren't happy with its low sound quality from an equipment malfunction and refused to listen to it when it was complete.

The Daily Vault Album Reviews : Katy Lied
Katy Lied has the honor of being the only Steely Dan album without a personality.
This time around, the cynicism seems forced, the lyrics don't bite as hard as usual, the stories are weak and the songs aren't as memorable.
Granted, with any Steely Dan album, there is bound to be excellent musicianship and female backing vocals that lend the songs some soul, but on the whole Katy Lied fails to fully entertain.

 Metal Leg 9 - Pretzel Logica/Katy Lied
Steely Dan were now a studio band, and despite the fact that, in years to come, stories of their touring activities proliferated in the music press, they all came to nothing.
Katy Lied's sleeve suggested another "group effort" with the reverse of the album's striking front cover showing a few new faces, and some unfamiliar heads on well-known shoulders.
These two musicians were to play an important part in the making of this album, just as they had done in the group's final concert performances, but the LP took Becker and Fagen's concept of hiring crack session musicians to play their music one step further.

This 1975 album from Steely Dan called "Katie Lied" re-issued in 1999, is a vast improvement on the previous released version of this album.
The version before this one was so lack lustre, it sounded cold and metallic and not very inviting to the ears, where as this version is warm and full of detail the job of re-mastering has been done under the supervision of Fagen and Becker.

and then theres katy lied and aja, which have similar solo breaks with separate chord changes and beatiful melodies.
but to give the attention to katy lied, since it is its review after all, and not an overview of steely dan album comparisons, let me just say that katy lied is brilliant and it is easily detectable that the dan were developing rapidly within their studio walls ever since theyd abandoned touring for good.
to me, (although its another comparison) pretzel logic and katy lied are the rubber soul and revolver, or highway 61 and blonde on blonde of steely dan.

Steely Dan's fourth album Katy Lied has many of the characterizes of the album that preceded it, Pretzel Logic, as it is an great collection of short soothing songs.
They also toned down dirtiness of the guitar instrumentals, with the exception of their classic "Black Friday" with a searing solo on the opening track.

If Pretzel Logic was squeezing jazz out of the pop monster, then Katy Lied is squeezing pop out of the jazz monster.
Where Pretzel Logic was like trying to breath air that's too cold and too distant to get into your lungs, this one was like lapping overproof treacle in a rainforest - the sensation drilled your heart.
More than any other I guess the lyrics on Katy Lied were opaque to the point of irrelevance.

In 1975 after an extraordinarily successful run of releases which culminated in that "steely" masterpiece, PRETZEL LOGIC, the Dan shifted direction a bit and opened their music up on KATY LIED.
KATY LIED contains Steely Dan`s most emotional, even passionate music up to that point, matched only by the brilliant AJA a few years later.
KATY LIED is also notable for the appearance of vocalist Michael McDonald, whose grainy baritone blends particularly well with Fagen`s unique sound.

Usually, such a studied recording method would drain the life out of each song, but that's not the case with Katy Lied, which actually benefits from the duo's perfectionist tendencies.
Each song is given a glossy sheen, one that accentuates not only the stronger pop hooks, but also the precise technical skill of the professional musicians drafted to play the solos.
Essentially, Katy Lied is a smoother version of Pretzel Logic, featuring the same cross-section of jazz-pop and blues-rock.

 Progressive Ears Album Reviews
Steely Dan's fourth album Katy Lied marked a departure from past methods and newfound musical growth.
I think Katy is in some ways a throwback to the previous albums, it reminds me a lot of Pretzel Logic and is almost as diverse musically and as quirky; yet the uptown jazz/pop style they became known for by the end of the 70s makes it's debut here as well.
This is not the most even album the band would make and it is clear they were in a state of transition.

But Mitch Wade, man, you’re everywhere — bribing the Duke-stir, “giving” Katy Harris $32,000 of illegal contributions (plus dinner), oh, that’s right, and providing representatives with hookers.
Despite the guilt of years of unsuccessful attempts to please a man, she gave in; her lip quivered as images of her naked body being bathed in moonlight rushed to her head.
"Yeeees, you're warm and yielding, like a frightened white rabbit." Katy could feel herself glow and beads of perspiration rose from her delicate pores, weakening the fortress of mascara - it crumbled and ran down her face like so many years of bad decisions..."

Steely Dan / Katy Lied album review [plus 'Everyone's Gone To The Movies' song lyrics]
Album Review: Steely Dan's fourth album, Katy Lied, finds them simultaneous searching for more meaning in their songs but not willing to give up the tongue-in-cheek pop craft that marked their first three albums.
But Steely Dan does indeed start embedding more serious messages into its work here, beginning with the aching and mysterious "Doctor Wu." It continues on "Any World (That I'm Welcome To)," a song about the complete frustration we often feel with the modern world.
Several other songs on Katy Lied find Steely Dan at the top of their game, including, "Bad Sneakers," a laid-back song about living in the metropolis, and "Chain Lightning," which practically shimmers with its high production values.
