The park was opened May 9, 2004, and includes 1118 acres (4.5 km²) of shoreline and bottomland.
Trails are under construction and will eventually connect with the Katy Trail which runs for 225 miles (362 km) across Missouri to the west of the park.

This abandonment has legal implications, since the old railroad corridor that the Katy Trail State Park sits on is presently designated for "interim use," meaning that it must be preserved for the railroad's right of way, should ever the corridor become a rail line again.
Once the trail is interrupted by private land, it would be very difficult to restore, if not impossible, and the viability of the entire trail as a recreational park would be in danger.

The trail is approximately 51 miles (25.6 miles from Sedalia to Calhoun, then turn and ride back) There are several signs along the way pointing out that bikes and pedestrians yield to horses.
The trail is a level rail bed which was converted to a trail, shoes not required if horses are used to being barefoot.
The trail head was fairly easy to find, we came into Sedalia off 50 Highway and there were brown state park signs leading us right to the parking lot at the trail head.

Having ridden numerous mountain bike trails from Colorado to Connecticut, I would like to state a common opinion that, regardless of difficulty, a "Mountain Bike Trail" is not a 30' wide flat ex-railbed.
I have to respond to the few comments that deride the Katy as a bike trail because it is not "challenging or hilly or dangerous" or whatever.
The trail along that route is very straight lacking the curves and turns I am used to between Jefferson City and Hartsburg.
