Kaumatua - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Kaumatua are respected male tribal elders in a Maori community who have been involved with their whanau for a number of years.
Kaumatua have good knowledge of Tikanga, history, and Te Reo; and their contribution ensures that the mana of the whanau, hapu, and iwi are maintained.
Kaumatua that are involved in health organisations play a pivotal role in guiding kaimatai hinengaro, similar to their role in the Maori community.

Kaumatua Flats   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The Kaumatua flats were built in 1985, acquired by way of a tri-apatite agreement between Housing NZ (Landlord), Te Taitokerau Trust Board (Iwi broker) and Karangahape Marae (Tennant).
The recent location of the Te Ohonga Reo to be situated next to the Kaumatua Flats now provides for a lot more interaction and support with the kaiako, whanau and mokopuna.
Any whanau interested in making application for a Kaumatua Flat, should do so in writing to the Karangahape Marae Trust, at which time their application will be considered on a case by case basis, consistent with the process now implemented by the Trustees.

New Zealand Journal of Psychology: KAUMATAUTANGA reciprocity: Maori elderly and whanau
This paper explores three aspects of that trend: first, the current cultural roles and socio-economic standing of Maori elderly, kaumatua; second, the likely cultural profiles of the next generation of elderly; and third, the implications of demographic and cultural changes for older Maori as kaumatua and leaders.
Those roles include speaking on behalf of the tribe, or family; resolving disputes and conflicts between families and between tribes; carrying the culture; protecting and nurturing younger adults and children; and recognising and encouraging the potential of younger members.
It is still considered undignified for young people to travel to a tangi without kaumatua to guide them and to perform, on their behalf, the many necessary duties.

Many Matata residents believe the earthquakes, which are continuing, have loosened much of the rock and trees on the hills surrounding the coastal town which, in turn, resulted in a lot of it being washed down by this week's deluge.
