  Kauai - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
During the reign of King Kamehameha, the islands of Kauai and Niihau were the last Hawaiian Islands to join his Kingdom of Hawaii.
Their ruler, Kaumualii, resisted Kamehameha for years, until the king arrived with a huge armada of ships to take the islands by force.
Kaumualii decided to join the kingdom without bloodshed, and became Kamehameha's vassal in 1810.

The Russian went to Kauai, nominally under the control of King Kaumualii, to salvage Russian cargo being held in Waimea.
Kaumualii allowed Scheffer to build a fort near Waimea and two others near Hanalei.
Russian Fort Elizabeth eventually went under the control of Kamehameha supporters and years later was used to put down a rebellion by Kaumualii's son, George Prince Kaumualii.

The wily Kaumualii did the expedient thing by surrendering without a fight, but he obviously didn't like having to answer to Kamehameha.
Kaumualii saw in Scheffer the chance to get the Russians involved on Kauai which possibly might restore his kingdom.

 THE RUSSIAN PRESENCE IN HAWAII: Kauai fort Elizabeth
The ship and the cargo were confiscated by Kaumualii, king of Kauai, subsequently, the Russian-American Company sent an agent, Georg Anton Schäffer (a German surgeon of one of the Company vessel), to diplomatically recover the company's lost properties.
Schäffer mission was to gain the confidence of Kamehameha I to whom in 1810, Kaumualii had acknowledged sovereignty, once the bond existed between Schäffer and Kamehameha I, he was to reveal the true character of his mission and request Kamehameha's assistance in securing compensation from Kaumualii for the confiscated cargo.
In return Kaumualii promised to the Russian half of the island of Oahu and all the sandalwood on Oahu and Kauai, the Russian also would be permitted to built factories on all of Kaumualii newly conquered islands.

When the king went to England in 1823, she was appointed regent and she remained in that position after his death, until Kamehameha III should come of age.
In 1821 she kidnapped and married King Kaumualii of Kauai, the only island never conquered by Kamehameha I. She also married Kaumualii's son, Kealiiahonui, whom she later released at the request of the Christian missionaries.
With Kaumualii's death in 1824, Kauai's separate status was ended and all Hawaiian islands united.

From the Lihue International Airport head west towards Waimea on Route 50 (Kaumualii Highway) and go through the town called Kekaha, about 35 miles from the Lihue International Airport.
About 1 mile outside Kekaha look for a row of tall pine trees starting at the Kaumualii Highway and going towards the ocean.
