		For students of the Bulgarian kaval, Slavov's "Passing with the Time: Popular Bulgarian Folk Songs for Kaval" features two attractive aspects: first, that it presents not dance tunes, but a program of songs, 12 in all.
		Dossev's method of formalizing and annotating the stylistic niceties of the kaval is as lucid and understandable as any I've seen; they're many steps beyond Todor Prashanov's attempts to standardize Bulgarian stylistic notation in the `60s, and they're specific to the kaval itself.
		In defense of a style outline that may suffer some gaps, it would be easy indeed to go too far in the opposite direction, bogging down the poor reader in a deluge of mind-numbing technical detail.
