A new desalination plant is scheduled to become operational on Monday in Kavaratti in the presence of the Minister for Science and Technology and Ocean Development, Shri.
The temperature difference which exists between the warm surface sea water (28 to 30 degrees Celsius) and deep sea cold water (7 to15 degrees Celsius) would be effectively utilized to produce potable water apart from power generation, air conditioning and aquaculture.
This approach of providing water is extremely useful for islands like Kavaratti where there is no other source of fresh water and the environment is extremely fragile.

Kavaratti: One person was killed and four others, including a senior Planning Commission official, had a miraculous escape when a Pawan Hans helicopter they were travelling in crashed into the sea minutes before it was to land in Agatti island in Lakshadweep today (October 30) morning.
Rajan Katoch, Advisor in the Planning Commission, his wife and two pilots were rescued by fishermen when the Dauphin chopper which had taken off from Kalmat fell into the shallow waters apparently following propeller failure.
It had left Kavaratti for Bangaram and Agatti at around 10:00 hours (IST).
