I am currently running my vessel out of Kavieng and the reason for this was I was interested in the raid on Kavieng on the 15th February 1944 when four A/C's were lost.
Facing NNW, she is lying on her starboard wing and her port wing was raised off the sand so you can swim underneath the wing.The fuselage is bent at the waist gunners position and is bent to port at a angle of 20 degrees.
The Kavieng area is best known for its big fish action and its clear water and is a must for the adventurous diver.

In December 1941, the impending invasion by the Japanese meant that wives and children were evacuated from Kavieng and, early in 1942, the station was bombed.

KAVIENG town in New Ireland province came to a stand still last Friday, when three military patrol boats and the PNGDF CASA aircraft arrived with VIPS to close the bilateral maritime exercise codenamed Paradise 06 and launch the mobile phone services in the province.
About 70 PNGDF and Australian sailors marched through Kavieng town amid rousing cheers from the local population who lined the street in force to witness the sailors receive the key to Kavieng town from the lord mayor.
An official parade was held at the Kavieng court house oval where Mr Aini conducted a parade inspection before officially closing the maritime exercise.

American plans originally called for a land invasion of Kavieng, but on March 12, 1944 the Joint Chiefs canceled the scheduled invasion, as part of the island hopping strategy to bypass the heavily fortified area and liberated Hollandia and Emirau instead.
Thanks to Harumi Sakaguchi for this description: The unit which raised the pillar to commemorate its presence was from the '13th Aerial Torpedo Adjustment Squadron', based in Kavieng.
Theirs was one of the units specialized in adjusting the aerial torpedoes used by the bombers of the Japanese naval air force based in Rabaul and in Kavieng.

Kavieng is reputed to have opportunities for scuba diving and underwater photography that are among the finest on the planet.
The sea fans and soft coral growing on the wreck provided habitat for small gobies, hawkfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, wrasse and damselfish, while there was a large population of stingrays, gobies and their partner shrimp and numerous pairs of crab-eyed gobies in the silty sand around the wreck.
While the travel to and from Kavieng PNG was a challenge, my ten days of diving in the area easily lived up to my high pre-trip expectations.

Posted - 03 July 2006 : 07:20:47 AM The diving in Kavieng is awesome - sheer walls, some interesting wrecks, lots of big fish and some amazing macro as well as great vis.
John and I stayed at Malagan's resort in Kavieng in 2004 and dived with Scuba Ventures but you can also stay on Nusa Island across the lagoon or on Lissenung, which is located further out (about 30 mins by boat).
