  Kawanishi N1K2
GEORGE was actually the Kawanishi N1K2 Shiden (Violet Lightning), the unlikely descendant of a floatplane fighter design, the N1K1 REX (see NASM collection).
The Kawanishi N1K1 (Allied codename REX) was the only airplane designed specifically for this purpose to fly during World War II.
Kawanishi flew the first N1K1-J land-based fighter on December 27, 1942.

 The Kawanishi H6K "Mavis" & H8K "Emily" Flying Boats
Kawanishi submitted two designs for monoplane flying boats, including the "Type Q" with four engines and the "Type R" with three.
Kawanishi replied with a new design, the "Type S", that had been evolved from the two earlier submissions.
The Type S was accepted, and the first of four prototypes of the "H6K1", as the IJN referred to it, performed its initial flight on 14 July 1936, with Katsuji Kondo at the controls.

Long Beach, CA The Kawanishi N1K2-J was operated by an elite Naval squadron at Matsuyama in Southern Japan during the closing months of the Pacific War.
Recognizing that the Kyofu's airframe, which included automatic manuvering flaps and a laminar-flow wing, might be developed into a potent land-based fighter, Kawanishi built a new fighter prototype as a private venture.
Kawanishi's "Model X-1" fighter had a fully-retractable tailwheel undercarriage, a more powerful engine(an early Nakajima Homare 11(NK9A or NK9K) rated at 1825 hp.

 Kawanishi H8K - IJN Flying Boat
During the early part of the Pacific War the Japanese Navy's standard ocean patrol flying boat was the H6K - which the Allies gave the reporting-name 'Mavis'.
Though Kawanishi had a technical agreement with the British firm of Short Brothers, the H6K strongly resembled a Sikorsky S.42, and was an excellent aircraft.
In the H8K Kawanishi produced a design which represented the biggest single leap in the design of such aircraft in all of aviation history.

 World War II Aircraft - Kawanishi H6K 'Mavis'
The only long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft in Japanese naval service when the war began, the H6K Type 97 - given the Allied code name 'Mavis' - served early in the war in bombing strikes against targets in the Dutch East Indies and at Rabaul.
Five prototypes were ordered from Kawanishi, with the first aircraft flying in July 1936.
The H6K2-L variant could carry eighteen passengers (or ten in seats four in sleeping berths), and eighteen aircraft were flown by Japan Air Lines on Western Pacific routes.

Although only 167 examples were produced, the large Kawanishi H8K was the most outstanding and advanced flying-boat to achieve production status during World War II.
Designed to meet a requirement issued in 1938 for a four-engine maritime reconnaissance flying-boat superior in all respects to the British Short Sunderland, the H8K1 prototype was first flown in January 1941, but proved initially to possess very poor water handling qualities.
