Kawanishi Aircraft Company - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While Kawanishi was best known for its seaplanes such as the H8K flying boat, its N1K-J land-based fighter was considered one of the best in the war.
It was founded in 1920 in Hyogo prefecture as an outgrowth of the Kawanishi conglomerate, which had been funding the Nakajima Aircraft Company.
The Kawanishi Aircraft Company was a Japanese aircraft manufacturer during World War II.

For the rest of the story of how this landplane Kyofu became the best IJN fighter to see combat, see the Kawanishi N1K-J Shiden.
Kawanishi Kokuki was instructed to begin development of an aircraft especially designed for this purpose and a team of engineers including Baba Toshihara, Kikuhara Shizuo, Adachi Elizaburo, and Inoue Hiroyuki commenced work on the design.
The first assignment of Kawanishi's floatplane fighter was in early 1944 as an interceptor at Balikpapan, Borneo to defend the oil refineries there.

 Kawanishi N1K Shiden
The Kawanishi N1K2-J Shiden Kai (Violet Lightning Modified) is generally rated as being one of the finest land-based fighter planes fielded by the Japanese during the Pacific War.
In December of 1941, the Kawanishi engineering team proposed to their management that it might be a good idea to produce a land-based version of the company's N1K1 Kyofu seaplane fighter.
The J indicated that it was a landplane development of the original N1K1.

Combining the Scratchbuilders 1/32nd scale resin conversion set of the Kawanishi N1K1 Kyofu "Rex" and the Revell/Takara Kawanishi N1K1-J Shiden "George" to represent the Rex flown by Lieutenant Yasushi Kuwashima, the Hikotai leader of the Ohtsu Kokutai, while based at Lake Biwa in Japan during September 1944.
Kawanishi experienced numerous problems with the outrigger floats during the testing program, and subsequently a decision was made to modify the floats to a non-retractable design.
These problems forced the Kawanishi design team to abandon the contra-rotating props, in favour of a more conventional 3 bladed arrangement, which was incorporated in the second prototype.

The Kawanishi N1K-J "Shiden" (Violet Lightning) was Japan's most imposing fighter.
While previous models weren't successful in Europe, the addition of Pratt and Whitney engines made it greatly superior to Japans' Mitsubishi Zeros when it went into use in 1943.
Though land-based, it was superior to the Hellcat, and equal to both the Mustang and Corsair.

 Kawanishi N1K-J
Kawanishi's N1K was built as a floatplane fighter to support forward offensive operations where no airstrips were available, but by 1943 when the aircraft entered service, Japan was firmly on the defensive, and there was no need for the N1K.
The Kawanishi N1K-J "Shiden" (紫電 "Violet Lightning") was a land-based version of the company's N1K "Kyofu" seaplane fighter aircraft.
Kawanishi engineers, however, had proposed in late 1941 that the N1K would produce a formidable land-based fighter too, and a land-based version was produced as a private venture by the company.
