 J League Teams: Kawasaki Frontale
Kawasaki Frontale bears a rather dubious distinction; the team was the first J2 club ever promoted to J1, but also was the first former J2 club ever to be relegated back to the J2.
Frontale finished second in the old JFL in 1998, and first in the J2 in 1999, thereby winning promotion to the J1.
Kawasaki were in the race for promotion until the final week of the season, when despite a victory over Sanfrecce Hiroshima in the penultimate match, they finished in third place on goal difference.

This was just a taster of what was to come from Kawasaki, as on 11 minutes they took a deserved lead when Korotsu converted from just inside the area following an excellent through ball from Harada.
The Kawasaki goalkeeper was well beaten by the effort but somehow the swerve went against Okocha at the final minute.
Kawasaki still posed a threat but the fact that Bolton had stepped up a gear meant that it was hard for the Japanese to repeat their early spell of pressure.

Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, was chosen as the J-League hometown.
It was chosen because it was already the hometown of Kawasaki Frontale F.C. (Frontale) in the Division 2 of the J-League, and it is located between two huge cities, Yokohama and Tokyo, not an easy location for a sport franchise to take root.
To that purpose, interview surveys were conducted with members of the Frontale club, of the Association of Shopping Districts in Kawasaki, and of the Kawasaki Government Office.
