NEW YORK -- Kay Gardella, a television critic for the New York Daily News for almost 60 years, has died in Manhattan.
Gardella died Wednesday after a long battle with cancer, the paper said.
Gardella became radio and television editor in 1975 and television critic in 1981.

Daily News television critic Kay Gardella, whose blunt opinions and unapologetic love for the golden age of entertainment made her an institution at the paper for almost 60 years, died yesterday at Cabrini Medical Center in Manhattan.
She is survived by nieces Kathryn Hopson and Frances Gardella of Barnegat, N.J., and nephews Charles Gardella of North Arlington, N.J., a Daily News sports tabulator, and John Gardella of Port Richey, Fla.
Gardella lamented the passing of the golden age of newspapers along with the golden age of entertainment.

Former residents of the greater New York area might be interested to learn that TV columnist Kay Gardella, a 60-year veteran of the New York Daily News, passed away last month at 82.
Bianculli recalled that CBS once provided Gardella with a golf cart and driver so that she wouldn't have to walk down the long corridors of a Los Angeles hotel where the TCA was meeting.
Kay was named radio and TV editor of the Daily News in 1975, took over as TV critic in 1981 and became a columnist in 1993.
