  Radio Hall of Fame - Kay Kyser, Music / Variety
One of the first bandleaders to become a radio celebrity, Kay Kyser was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina on June 18, 1906.
Kyser retired from show business in the early 1950s and later became manager of the film and broadcasting department of the Christian Science Church.
Kay Kyser was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1990.

Kay got the job and traveled to New York where she made her network radio debut singing “Memphis Blues,” but two weeks later she was replaced by Helen Ward when management decided the program needed a more “seasoned” performer.
In Kay’s view Capitol was not making any serious attempts to get her to re-sign, and she also felt that the label was treating her as it’s “utility singer” by the wide gamut of styles and material they had her record.
Kay Starr has always considered herself a “saloon singer” who told a story with each song, and is critically recognized for the power and emotion of her singing style.

LOS ANGELES -- Harry Babbitt, the Kay Kyser orchestra lead vocalist who sang on such Kyser hits as "Three Little Fishies," "On A Slow Boat to China" and "Who Wouldn't Love You," -- and who voiced the laugh of Woody Woodpecker -- has died.
Babbitt sang with the Kay Kyser band from 1938 to about 1949, with time out for service in the Navy from 1944 to 1946.
He also was featured on "Kay Kyser's Kollege of Musical Knowledge," a popular comedy-musical radio quiz show on NBC, on which Kyser wore a cap and gown and was dubbed the "Ol' Professor." His musicians wore beanies and lettered sweaters for the benefit of the studio audience.

Bandleader Kay Kyser, known as “the old professor” on the show, wore a fl robe and mortarboard hat.
Kyser always enjoyed it when a contestant answered a true question “false” in the true-false part of the quiz, and shouted “That’s right, you’re wrong!” When a contestant would answer a question wrong, Kyser would then shout to the audience, “Students!” and the audience would together shout the correct answer at the contestant.
