Denman had worked his way into sixth ahead of 16th starter Pearson, Kay and Nelson.
The top dozen finishers were on the lead lap with Johnson the winner ahead of Hogge, Papenhausen, Jacobsen, Silva, Denman, Pearson, Kay, Nelson, R Bartels, B Bartels and Damitz.

She said former Gov. Kay Orr, Nelson's predecessor, came to the second Groundwater Festival and did a great job interacting with the students.
Nelson opened the press conference by thanking Seacrest and the Groundwater Foundation staff for putting on another outstanding learning experience through the three-day Children's International Groundwater Summit and one-day festival.
Foundation President Susan Seacrest, speaking after the official press conference, also stressed that the festival is bipartisan.

Both Kay Orr and Helen Boosalis were well known in Nebraska electoral politics, with Orr serving as state treasurer and Boosalis as mayor of Lincoln.
For example, during the 1986 gubernatorial race in Nebraska between Kay Orr and Helen Boosalis, the candidates struggled to overcome the national media’s unwillingness to view the race in conventional political terms.
In 1990 Orr was defeated in her bid for a second term by her Democratic challenger, Ben Nelson.

In 1986 Republican Kay Orr, a former state treasurer, and Democrat Helen Boosalis, a former Lincoln mayor, competed for the governorship—the first time in the nation’s history that both major parties had nominated women for the highest office in any state.
In 1990, however, Orr was defeated by Democrat Benjamin Nelson, an insurance executive who attacked Orr for raising taxes and supporting a proposed low-level nuclear waste dump.

One of two election campaign attacks by Nelson was on Orr's record of tax increases and supporting a proposed low-level nuclear waste dump.
Nelson, once becoming governor, would later reject the nuclear waste dump, prompting a law-suit and a settlement worth $145 million for a failed nuclear waste compact.

Nelson remembers an important ritual that his father performed while Ray was lying in bed with only a curtain for a door to his room in the original part of the farmhouse.
Ray Nelson has seen many changes in farming since he was a boy growing up on Porter Bench, a windblown farming area a dozen miles southwest of Conrad just across the line into Teton County.
The tree's deep-tan color and unusual grain accent a three-foot-tall grandfather's clock that he recently built and gave to his daughter, Kay, who is a nurse in Portland, Ore. Working with the beautiful wood was a challenge, he said, and he was surprised at how well the clock turned out.

In between bites of soybean donuts, children at the 1990 festival met then-Nebraska Governor Kay Orr and walked at a slower pace and in more orderly fashion than the previous year as activities were pre-selected and written on a schedule for each school, reducing some of the chaos and mad dashes through the halls.
Ben Nelson, Orr’s successor in the governor’s office, paid his first visit to the festival in 1991 and commented that he wished more would have been done to teach children about groundwater years ago.
Groundwater, she said, is a treasure sitting under our feet, a treasure more precious than Saudi Arabian oil.
