  KAY STARR BIOGRAPHY
Kay Starr was born Katherine LaVerne Starks in Dougherty, Oklahoma, on July 21, 1922.
In Kay’s view Capitol was not making any serious attempts to get her to re-sign, and she also felt that the label was treating her as it’s “utility singer” by the wide gamut of styles and material they had her record.
Kay Starr has always considered herself a “saloon singer” who told a story with each song, and is critically recognized for the power and emotion of her singing style.

Kay Starr is remembered by many as one of great female pop singers who sold millions of records during the period about which we now fondly reminisce as "the fabulous '50s".
Kay Starr was the only "white" singer who made it big despite the unmistakable jazz-blues characteristics in her singing style.
Like Kay, Mildred was part Indian and had a strong affinity for "race" music (at that time, it meant the blues and jazz material as fl musicians and singers performed it), so it was natural for young Kay Starr to try to assimilate Mildred's singing style.

Kay Starr Country - Kay Starr - Song Listings   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Kay Starr dabbled in country music throughout her career, on albums like Just Plain Country, and the hit singles "Foolin' Around" and "Four Walls," but all of those recordings had very pop-oriented arrangements.
Starr doesn't entirely leave her pop fans hanging -- the song "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" was an enormous pop hit that year, although the country accompaniment (which includes, again, a banjo) on Starr's version links it with the surrounding tracks.
Kay Starr Country is one of Starr's last albums, and a fun departure for the veteran pop vocalist.

 Songbirds: Kay Starr
Kay Starr has eloquently sung jazz, blues, pop, rock 'n' roll, rhythm and blues, folk, gospel, "hillbilly" and country.
It is indeed Kay in both cases, with her trademark self-assurance while speaking, and an already husky instrument while singing.
Kay turns in unique renditions through her idiosyncratic phrasing, and various stylistic devices, including emphases on syllables other than the conventional ones, pauses, and stretched notes.

The song was released on Capitol Records in 1948, and it promptly climbed to No. 16 on the charts later that year.
Starr's second hit, "So Tired," soared to No. 7 early the next year.
Starr also became one of the first recording artists to "overdub" her own voice in her recording of "Side by Side" (No. 3/1953).

Kay Starr was one of a rare breed who, after years of success with one major label, were able to move to another label and continue to rack up the hits.
Since Kay Starr's roots were in jazz, her commercial recordings as middle of the road as they are, are still very enjoyable.
Starr was unique and jazzy even in the most middle of the road tunes like "Bonaparte's Retreat." But before buying this CD try these three essential recordings by Kay Starr "I Cry By Night" with Ben Webster, "Movin'" and "I Hear The Word"(the only one not yet on CD)

Kay Starr - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was while she was on the Memphis radio station WMPS that, as a result of misspellings in her fan mail, she and her parents decided to give her the name "Kay Starr." At the age of fifteen, she was chosen to sing with the Joe Venuti orchestra.
Around 1950 Starr made a trip back home to Dougherty and heard a fiddle recording of Pee Wee King's song, "Bonaparte's Retreat." She liked it so much that she wanted to record it, and contacted Roy Acuff's publishing house in Nashville, Tennessee, and spoke to Acuff directly.
He was happy to let her record it, but it took a while for her to make clear that she was a singer, not a fiddler, and therefore needed to have some lyrics written.

Though Kay’s first recording for the label, “I’m The Lonesomest Gal In Town,” was not released until 1950, still her cover of Russ Morgan’s “So Tired” became her first top ten hit, January1949.
Kay’ Starr's next success came with her cover of Perry Como’s polka "Hoop-Dee-Doo,” which reached number two on the charts in the spring of 1950.

The Ultimate Kay Starr, British EMI's collection of Kay Starr material from her lengthy Capitol years, presents a solid track selection, though annotation errors abound and the compilers attempt to pass off Capitol versions of her biggest hits -- "The Rock and Roll Waltz," "Wheel of Fortune" -- as the real things.
Starr's Capitol recordings were generally excellent, brassy sides, angling toward the pop audience but with plenty of power and swing to attract jazz fans.
Actress/singer Polly Bergen was born July 14, 1930 in Knoxville, TN, making her radio debut at the age of 14 and honing her craft on the summer stock circuit before journeying to Hollywood in 1949.

This is a great CD for Kay's fans (obviously), as well as fans of classic pop vocals.
My only disappointment (and it's a minor one) is that this is a collection of Kay's recordings for Capitol Records so it doesn't have her recordings from her years at RCA, for example.
