Kayin (or Karen) state occupies eastern part of the Thaninthayi (Tenasserim) mountain range, and is bordered with Thailand's Tak and Mae Hong Son provinces on the east.

Cashew is cultivated at present in ten regions, namely, in Kachin State, Kayin State, Sagaing Division, Taninthayi Division, Bago Division, Mon State, Rakhine State, Yangon Division, Shan State and Ayeyarwady Division.
Due to its close proximity to Mon State, agro-climatic conditions are somewhat similar except the fact that minimum temperatures rarely go down below the critical level of 18° C. Consequently, yields as high as 294 kg per ha are realized in Kayin State.
From 1982-1992 the government was responsible for the establishment of cashew plantations in the different States and Divisions of the country.

Presently the ICRC in collaboration with the MRCS is carrying out an assessment in the rural areas of Kawkareik township (Kayin State) and Ye township (Mon State).

Of the prior four SIZ planned earlier, a master plan for the establishment of Thilawa SIZ, which is an exceptional and prospective first full foreign investment zone, has been designed for Myanmar by Chinese experts for feasibility study with the cooperation of the Myanmar side.
The three other Thai-proposed industrial zones, located in Myawaddy and Hpa-an in southeastern Kayin state and Mawlamyine in southern Mon state, constitute part of an economic cooperation strategy (ECS) program agreed upon at a summit of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand held in Myanmar's ancient city of Bagan in November 2003.

Ethnic minority villagers in northern Kayin (Karen) state and in the east of an area known as Bago Division, in eastern Myanmar, are at risk of human rights violations following a recent escalation in counter-insurgency operations against the Karen National Union (KNU) by the Myanmar army.
The Myanmar authorities stated in April 2006 that the government has taken "security measures" against the KNU and that places where "destructive elements" can hide were being cleared, although further details have not been provided by the authorities at this time.
In the ongoing military operations in Kayin state, villages have reportedly been attacked and ordered by the Myanmar army, or tatmadaw, to relocate as part of the army’s tactics to break alleged links between armed opposition groups and the local civilian population.

An 18-year-old Karen Muslim woman who worked with her husband as a day labourer in the Kayin State was forced to upgrade a motor road in April 2004 for seven days in a row; she reported that she had to do forced labour at least three times per month, sometimes working in a military plantation.
A 37-year-old Karen farmer from Hpa’an township, Kayin State told Amnesty International that she left her home village with her family to seek work in Thailand because of difficulties in paying fees which both the SPDC and the DKBA demanded.
