Kazimierz was the son of Mieszko II and Rycheza, the niece of the Emperor Otto III.
However, Kazimierz continued the policy of forging alliances with the German emperor who supported him in a successful bid to return to power in Poland following on the heels of a disturbing Czech invasion.
Kazimierz both restored national order and proclaimed Krakow to the political center of a growing kingdom to which he added the regions of Mazowsze, and Silesia.
