Kaziranga National Park is situated on the south bank of the Brahmaputra river in Assam.
The national park is a vast stretch of coarse, tall elephant grass, marshland and dense tropical moist broadleaf forests.
Bounded by the misty blue hills of Barail and Karbi Anglong to the south, the national park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.

Kaziranga National Park, famed for its one-horned rhino, is reeling under the impact of floods with almost the entire area submerged by swirling waters of the Brahmaputra, which left 30 animals dead, park sources said on Wednesday.
A 50-km stretch of National Highway-37 passes along the park that the animals have to cross to reach the adjoining hills of Karbi Anglong to escape the flood waters, they said.
The entire 430 sq km area of the park is under water, barring the natural and artificial uplands constructed for the safety of the animals, the sources added.

The national highway on the southern boundary is becoming busier and encouraging settlement on either side, thus widening the gap between the national park and the southern hills.
Seasonal flooding causes many animals to move out of the national park during the rains, leaving them vulnerable to hunting and reprisals for crop damage; hence the need to extend it to include higher ground to the south.
Some 22,020 people visited the park in 1983-1984; but only with the end of political turmoil in Assam is the full tourist potential of Kaziranga being explored.
