Sakuraba's fight against Royce in the PRIDE Grand Prix 2000 Finals was also of historical significance; it marked Royce's first defeat in mixed martial arts after an undefeated run in the UFC and stands as the longest match in modern MMA history at 90 minutes.
Sakuraba was rushed to the hospital following the bout and later given a follow-up MRI.
